Personal Certificates (S/MIME)
Personal certificates (Personal ID, S/MIME) are used to confirm the identity of individuals and for electronic communication (electronic signature). A message signed with a personal certificate not only evidences the origin, authorship, and immutability, but also the identity of the sender, which is verified and stated in the personal certificate.

How does an electronic signature work?
An electronic signature is a digital method for verifying the identity of the signing person and ensuring the integrity of electronic documents. The basic principle is the use of cryptographic technologies, which ensure the security, origin, and authenticity of the signed content. When using an electronic signature, asymmetric cryptography is employed, which means that the person signing the document uses a private key to create the signature. This signature is unique to the document and ensures that any changes to the document after signing will be immediately detected. To verify the signature, the recipient uses the public key of the signing person, which confirms whether the signature corresponds to the original document. Electronic signatures are widely used in electronic communication and enable efficient, fast, and secure document exchange.

Why use an electronic signature?
Immutability
A signed email cannot be edited without invalidating the signature. This means that the electronic signature ensures the integrity of the message, enabling verification that the content has not been changed after signing.
Authenticity
An electronic signature is used to verify the identity of the signer. Encryption technology is used to demonstrate that the person who signed the email is indeed who they claim to be.
Irrefutability
An electronic signature ensures that the signer cannot deny signing the email. Thanks to encryption and certificate technology, it is possible to prove when and by whom the email was signed, increasing the credibility of communication.

AUTOMATION OF S/MIME
KeyTalk CKMS can automate the lifecycle of S/MIME certificates by ensuring automatic creation, distribution, and renewal of certificates without the need for manual intervention. The system also manages their revocation, eliminating the risk of human errors and certificate expirations. This ensures smooth and secure email traffic, better protection of sensitive data, and reduces the administrative burden on IT teams. More information about KeyTalk can be found here.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is an S/MIME certificate suitable for?
An S/MIME certificate is designed for digitally signing emails in email clients. It also allows emails to be encrypted.
What types of S/MIME certificates do you sell?
We sell S/MIME certificates for guaranteed electronic signatures. Unfortunately we do not offer certificates for qualified signatures.
What is the difference between a guaranteed and qualified signature?
A guaranteed electronic signature guarantees that the signature was created by the certificate owner. In the case of Class 2 certificates, it is possible to verify the identity (name and organization).
A qualified signature is a signature with a higher level of trustworthiness. It requires the storage of a private key on a qualified medium (token) and therefore is recognized for legal acts (level of handwritten signature) and is accepted by public administration (complies with eIDAS).
Are these S/MIME certificates compliant with the eIDAS regulation?
The S/MIME certificates we offer are for guaranteed electronic signatures and thus do not comply with the eIDAS regulation. We do not currently offer certificates for eIDAS.
